In collaboration with the Théâtre Gilles-Vigneault, SuperFolk presents a brand new series of shows at the Antony-Lessard Theater.
Mayday is the third album by Quebec artist Myriam Gendron, following the critically acclaimed Not So Deep as a Well (2014) and Ma Délire – Songs of Love, Lost & Found (2021). She got her start performing in the Paris Métro, where she played songs by Leonard Cohen on her guitar. After settling in Montreal, she discovered the poems of Dorothy Parker, who is better known for her bluntness than her poetic talent, while working in a bookstore. Fascinated by Parker's writing, Gendron decided to set some of her poems to music in her bedroom. Thus was born her first album, a work of great freshness, lightness, and humor.
After a brief hiatus, the Montrealer recorded a second album, Ma Délire, which pays homage to the traditional Quebecois repertoire and, more broadly, to the francophone song. It features traditional songs and personal creations (mostly in French), with arrangements that make room for avant-garde musical interludes by guitarist Bill Nace (Body/Head) and renowned jazz percussionist Chris Corsano.
Her third album, Mayday, synthesizes her artistic approach perfectly. Almost entirely composed of original songs in French and English, it marries tradition and avant-garde. For this album, she enlisted the talents of drummer Jim White (Dirty Three), guitarist Marisa Anderson, Montreal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (who also revives traditional music), Bill Nace, and Zoh Amba (whose saxophone closes the album). With Mayday, Myriam Gendron chooses intimacy and familiarity, while opening new sonic horizons.
Belle Grand Fille explores her inner landscapes with Les loups dorment tranquille, her second full-length album released in fall 2023. These ten new songs reveal the artist's light and dark sides, her hopes and her doubts, always in this evocative language of the great outdoors.
In this solo concert, Belle Grand Fille draws from the recesses of her childhood imagination to guide us through the woods, where fear and beauty share the same light.
